Dear Michelle,

In his autobiographical book, Night, Elie Wiesel tells of one of the horrors he experienced at Auschwitz.
The SS hanged two Jewish men and a youth in front of the whole camp.  The men died quickly, but the death throes of the youth lasted for half an hour.  "Where is God?", someone asked behind me.  As the youth still hung in torment in the noose after a long time, I heard the call again, "Where is God now?"  And I heard a voice in myself answer: "Where is God?  He is here.  He is hanging there on the gallows..."
Christian theologian Jurgen Moltmann, in reflecting on this account, says that any other answer would be blasphemy.  To speak here of a God who could not suffer would make God a demon.  This is the meaning of the Cross...God in Christ identifies with us completely, even to the point of facing agonizing death... God's greatness and glory, revealed in self-surrender and self-emptying; God's power revealed in dying the death of one who stands up for an alternative to imperial power; God's divinity, alive in Christ's humanity.

We as Christians believe God identifies with us totally through the Cross.  It is the ultimate expression of the incarnation.  Yet the Cross is not the last word.  He is Risen!  Life reigns over death and all of death's allies-  war, hunger, hate, greed, etc.  We as Christians are people who carry our crosses.  In other words, we live sacrificially for the sake of the world, for the sake of others, both locally and globally.  Yet our focus is always on Easter.  We are Easter people, who have faith that our life of love and sacrifice for others will not end in despair, but will ultimately result in meaning, fulfillment, and joy.  We believe that the way of Christ, the way Dr. John Powersof the Kingdom, the way of Shalom... of love, reconciliation, justice, healing, and peace, is ultimately triumphant over the way of death and death's allies.  Halleluiah!  He is Risen!

Shalom,
John

Bishop Whitaker

On Sunday night, March 21, 2010, Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a speech prior to the vote of the House of Representatives on the bill about insurance reform and health care.  In her speech, the Speaker praised a few organizations for their advocacy, including "The United Methodist Church."

The staff of the General Board of Church and Society has been active for a long time advocating for universal health care as a moral priority for the United States.  The board advocates on behalf of The United Methodist Church according to the statements in the Social Principles and the Book of Resolutions which are adopted by the General Conference.  Paragraph 162.V of the Social Principles in Book of Discipline is titled "Right to Health Care," and it states, "We believe that it is a governmental responsibility to provide all citizens with health care."  Moreover, in the Book of Resolutions 2008, Resolution No. 3201 on page 346 is titled "Health Care for All in the United States," and it contains a long discussion of the issues and "advocacy steps" which the staff of the General Board of Church and Society is obligated to follow.  This resolution was first adopted by the General Conference in 2000.

The staff of the General Board of Church and Society works with members of both major political parties and other religious organizations to advocate for the principles expressed in the Social Principles and the Book of Resolutions.  The board has long advocated for the principle of universal health care, and, because of its work, The United Methodist Church has been recognized by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States for its vision of a country in which there is health care for all.

The offering on this Special Sunday educates Native American seminarians, plants Native American churches and cultivates Native American outreach to seekers like Ray.

April 19-22, 2010 for Ecumenical Training at the Tampa Hyatt Regency
All are welcome to three days of prayer, lectures, seminars and network-building

National Workshop on Christian UnityWitnesses to the World! is the theme, building on the risen Christ's charge to the apostles that they are "witnesses to these things." (Luke 24.48). The three days are open to all who are ecumenically minded. Heading the program are Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori as preacher at the opening prayer service, Catholic Archbishop Wilton Gregory as keynoter, and Rev. Betty Gamble, GCCUIC Associate General Secretary, coordinates a new, United Methodist ecumenical network (UMEIT; see below). The Workshop is the only ecumenical training event officially recognized by the church bodies involved in the ecumenical movement. United Methodists have historically played a major role in the NWCU. Earth Day - April 22

As people of faith, we United Methodist want to be at the forefront of celebrating our Creator's handiwork and promoting the most thoughtful stewardship of God's creative work.  Most are aware that April is "earth month" and "earth day" is April 22nd.  You may already have plans to celebrate on Rural Life Sunday, but your Florida Conference Creation Care Task Force urges you to embrace the entire month with activities, study and devotional time that will bring people closer to God and all that God created.  The task force is working to seek out, create and provide resources to facilitate local church.  A variety of creation-related topics and activities can be downloaded for free from: http://www.ncccusa.org/news/100106earthday2010.html.  We urge congregations to take advantage of these resources to claim that creation is God's and that the people of God are leaders in the stewardship of the earth.
