Greetings!
Regarding Jesus' resurrection appearance with disciples on the road to Emmaus, Jesus was present with them long before they recognized him. If you will recall, Jesus walks the seven miles to Emmaus with them, conversing with them about the scriptures, and they don't recognize him. Only when he breaks bread do they suddenly recognize that it is him and that he has been with them all along. Christ is often present with us, even when we do not know it. The implication for non-believers, other-believers, or pre-believers is that Christ is with them even before they know it and come to faith. John Wesley, along with other theologians, called this prevenient grace. As Wesleyan theologian Ted Runyon points out, "Wesley is convinced that God's Spirit is at work everywhere in the world extending God's prevenient graciousness among all peoples..." and in Wesley's words, "not only in all Christians, but all Mahometans (Muslims), all pagans, yea the vilest of savages."
For those of us who are believers in Christ, as were the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we sometimes fail to recognize Christ's presence in our lives. We profess faith, yet we are so wrapped up in the business of our lives we do not pay attention to his presence. But that does not mean he's not there, just that we're too busy or preoccupied. Yet, Christ always seems to find a way to reveal himself in the resurrection appearances...to Mary Magdalene by saying her name; to Thomas by revealing his wounds; to Emmaus disciples by breaking bread.
How is Christ revealing his presence to you? Are you paying attention? May you come to know his ever present reality in your life. Blessings, John

*************************************************************************************************************** A word from the Church Mouse: "Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. It is a choice based on the knowledge that we belong to God and have found in God our refuge and our safety and that nothing, not even death, can take God away from us. Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing--sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death--can take that love away." --Henri Nouwen

Intentional Discipleship workshops offered
May 15-16 & Sept. 11-12
As part of our continuing spotlight on the five disciple-making practices of fruitful congregations, the Florida Conference will be focusing on "Intentional Discipleship" by offering two series of two, one-day workshops: May 15 and 16, and Sept. 11 and 12. These workshops will help local church leaders go deeper in their understanding of fulfilling the Great Commission of Matthew 28: "Go and make disciples . . . and teach them to obey all that I have commanded you."
The first, to be held May 15 at Grace United Methodist Church in Fort Clarke, and again on May 16 at First Boca Raton (East Campus), will look at what it means to be a "simple church," strategically focused on making disciples.
"Simple Church: Returning to God's Process for Making Disciples" is the name of book written by Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger that calls for congregational leaders to return to the simple Gospel-sharing methods of Jesus. In our frantic and complex culture where congregations are no longer the center of community life, no bells or whistles are required, so to speak. Based on case studies of 400 American churches, Rainer and Geiger show that the process for making disciples has often become too complex or even lost among all the religious activities that pact many congregations' busy calendars. During the workshop, led by Geiger, participants will hear how "simple churches" who focus on their intentional discipling process are thriving, while many congregations with hectic calendars are not. Geiger will help congregational leaders begin to look at their own church calendars in light of Christ's call for us to "make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."
The second series, "Deepening Your Effectiveness," will be held September 11 at First United Methodist Church in Port Orange, and repeated on Sept. 12 at First United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda.
"Deepening Your Effectiveness: Restructuring the Local Church for Life Transformation" is the title of a book written by Dan Glover and Claudia Lavy, who will lead these workshops. Their premise is that becoming a Christian disciple is supposed to be life-altering; a process of maturation and transformation. The church, they say, is to intentionally support that development - both individually and corporately. Sometimes, though, pitfalls and barriers in life and even within the church itself can damage committed but unequipped followers. Proposing a "deep-sea change" from the typical church plan, Glover and Lavy offer experienced coaching in how to systematize disciple-making in a congregation. Methodist Men's Ministry
Build a men's ministry and they will come. When did men originally get together to be "a creative, supportive fellowship of men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to grow spiritually and to seek daily his will"?
Did it start a few years before when The Twelve commissioned The Seven "full of Spirit and wisdom" to manage the affairs of the church while they could give attention to prayer and preaching the Word. [Acts 6]
We can all safely say this started when Jesus called ordinary men to "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" [Mark 1:17] and He commanded Peter, the rock upon which He would build His church, to "Feed my sheep." [John 21: 17] We know this today to mean to feed God's people more than just physically. This would mean "spiritually and to seek his daily will."
Today we have in the Gulf Central District 26 of 70 churches acknowledging the presence of a men's ministry within their churches. In the January 2009 report to the Florida Conference, 20 of these ministries are chartered with a commitment to the mission of the United Methodist Men which is "to be a creative, supportive fellowship of men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to grow spiritually and to seek daily his will."

You Can Build It!
Grab a hammer and get ready to build! The Gulf Central District is pleased to announce that we are going to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County and build a home for a local family in need. We know that building a home together is a great way to put our faith in action and will be an inspirational act of kindness and service. We would like to sponsor a family to build a house as a Habitat "Champion" sponsor.
We are at the beginning of the planning stage with Habitat Pinellas and we hope to involve all 24 congregations in Pinellas County. If you would like to participate in this Habitat mission, please select an advocate for your congregation and pass their name and email to flumc-gc@flumc.org.
We will organize a first planning meeting - with the goal to build a house in 2009! |
Conferences to consider church structure A UMNS Report By Linda Green
United Methodists meeting in this year's annual sessions will vote on 32 proposed constitutional amendments, many of them related to the denomination's structure as a global body.
Delegates to the 62 U.S. annual conferences and the 73 conferences in Africa, Europe and Asia will consider 23 amendments approved earlier by the 2008 United Methodist General Conference, the denomination's top legislative body. The amendments, proposed by the Task Force on the Worldwide Nature of the Church, are for the creation of regional conferences to establish a uniform denominational structure.
The remaining nine amendments are related to church and conference membership; annual and jurisdictional conference composition, including boundaries; inclusiveness of the church; representation of newly created conferences at general, jurisdictional and central conferences; the judicial council; episcopal elections; fiduciary responsibility; and clergy participation in the election of delegates to general, jurisdictional and central conferences. Sacred Conversations on Earth's Future
The earth is nearing a climate tipping point in the next few years. Warming of the atmosphere, changing rainfall patterns, millions more people going hungry, increased deaths from respiratory illness are already results of our fossil fuel dependence. We are at a critical moment in history, faced with two distinct futures. If we continue on our current path, we face catastrophic consequences for generations to come. If we choose a new path, we can create a sustainable and more just future for all of the planet's inhabitants. GOAL: Create Committed Congregational Action on Clean Energy to pass forward a more Just, Sustainable World. ACTION: FUSE has created "Sacred Conversations on Earth's Future". This is a resource to engage congregations in earnest conversations about the kind of earth we are called by God to pass forward to our children, grandchildren, and all of God's creatures. By discussing sacred texts, actively listening to scientific information, and centering in prayer participants face their fears and identify their hopes about climate change. They engage in discussions: [MORE. . .] |
