| Gulf Central District
January 2010 Newsletter |
Greetings!
Dr. Pat Turner-Sharpton, during his comedy routine at the recent Gulf Central District Clergy Retreat, sang a rap song, "It's Hard Out There for a Pastor". We loved it, and we all sang loud when the chorus came around (same chorus as the title). During the more serious presentations by Dr. Jim Harnish, we heard reflections on the brokenness of life as pastors, and I think we all, to some extent, identified. Two years ago, the chair of the Florida Conference Elders, Rev. Sue Haupert-Johnson, spoke at the Annual Conference Clergy Session on a similar theme, often in humorous detail, about dealing with difficult lay folk. We roared with laughter and clapped our approval.
As we begin 2010, I want to reflect on what I think may be the biggest problem facing United Methodist Churches- the emotional abuse of clergy by laity. Usually, the offending laity are abusive toward other laity as well. Let me acknowledge that there are clergy who bully, blame, and abuse power...no doubt about it. But what I have found in my first year and a half as a District Superintendant is that, more often, the bullying, blaming, and abusing come from a small, yet toxically effective group of laity. G. Lloyd Rediger calls them "clergy killers". They are also church killers and I believe they exist in most churches. The difference between healthy churches where they exist, and unhealthy, is that the healthy churches do not let these folk control the church's direction, and the laity leadership of those churches take responsibility in dealing with "the problem folk". They do not leave it to the pastor to fight the battles alone. I was pastoring a church many years ago that had an abusive, controlling, bullying Trustee Chair. For a year I was the only one who stood up to him and my life was miserable. It affected the life of the whole church. There was a negative cloud over us and everyone, visitors included, could sense it. Finally, at the beginning of a new year, the Trustees, on their own and without my prompting, voted him out as chair. They elected a strong, yet fair, consensus builder, who was not afraid to stand up to the bullying former chair. It transformed the Trustees and the church. I am sure my change in attitude and spirit as a result, helped.
To churches and pastors who may have problems with such folk, let me give the following advice.
For Pastors: Buck up and get some thick skin. We have all had folks like this take shots at us. Don't let them drag you and the church down. But also, be ready to listen to constructive criticism given in love. Most church folk are not "clergy killers" and most, if you'll encourage them and listen to them, can give helpful advice regarding your ministry. And, be careful not to be controlling, abusive and bullying toward laity and staff. Remember, as Reinhold Niebuhr once said, "the greasy finger print of original sin is upon us all", clergy included.
For Laity Leaders: Don't leave it to the pastors to deal with toxic church members. Don't put up with power-mongering bullies, or clergy abusers. Their numbers are small, but they will suck the life out of your church if you let them.
For Those who Think They may be Abusers: First, ask yourself if you've had problems in your relationship with more than one pastor. If so, read Clergy Killers, by G. Lloyd Rediger. You may find yourself described. Then, find a friend or acquaintance who has considerable time in a 12-step recovery program and ask that person about the importance of humility and rigorous honesty in the spiritual life. Then ask the person to explain how to keep a personal moral inventory (and why you need to refrain from keeping moral inventories of others) and how to make amends to those you have wronged, without the expectation of reciprocal amends (refraining from "I'm sorry, but..."). You may also want to ask the 12-step program member for advice about the importance of prayer, meditation, and seeking God's will and direction through "group consciousness" (i.e. through humble involvement in the community of faith). Hopefully, you will learn how to listen to and learn from others. You will learn how to accept, with humility, that you will not always get your way. And, you will learn something about the nature of love in the context of Christian community.
For clergy and laity, my hope prayer for 2010 is that, in these difficult days, church folk will be able to refrain from blaming, controlling, and bullying, and that they will seek to be as gracious to each other as God has been gracious to them. Loving, gracious churches are not void of problems, but they sure are healthier and happier than those where negativism and strife reigns. May your 2010 be filled with the love and grace of the humble yet powerful spirit of Christ.
Shalom,
John |

Congregational Transformation February 8 & 11 Jeff Stiggins - "Worship Planning Team" February 9 Phil Maynard
Team Planning for Passionate Worship Effective planning for passionate worship involves more than picking new hymns & scripture readings and plugging in the anthem & sermon titles on last Sunday's bulletin. By gathering a small team of key people together a congregation of any size can begin to plan for worship that connects people with God afresh and changes their lives. This class will give practical ideas about how to do this. Who needs to be involved? What is your team really trying to do? And what are the nuts and bolts that turn a good idea into a powerful worship experience?
Disaster Training: Marilyn Swanson & Pam Garrison Equipped to Minister - The important role of the church in disaster. Are you prepared? If a hurricane or other disaster was heading toward your community, would your church know what to do? In the aftermath of a disaster, would your church know how to respond? Who to call? How to help in cooperation with other responding organizations and agencies? This session will offer an overview of Disaster Recovery Ministry and the resources we offer the local church to assist them in helping their community prepare, respond and recover from disaster.
Faith Community Nursing - Building a Health Ministry: Grant Corrigan, RN FCN What does being healthy have to do with building the kingdom of God in 2010? In the gospel of Matthew Jesus instructed his disciples to go out and teach, preach and heal! How is your church doing at fulfilling those three specific instructions of Jesus? If your church is like many others there is lots of teaching and preaching, but what are you doing about the health (healing) of the congregation? Learn how to answer this and other questions that concern the health of your congregation and the ministry team! Come and learn about Faith Community Nursing and the Ministry of health.
Finance: Mickey Wilson & Ron Byers Are you the church Financial Secretary, Treasurer, or member of the Committee on Finance? Then this class is a wonderful opportunity to learn about your "job" from the "master" and ask all those questions you have been wondering about and did not know whom to ask. The Treasurer for the Florida Conference will address a variety of subjects, ranging from clergy tax issues to the importance of annual audits. W2/1099, who gets which, and why? 941? Housing allowances/Housing Exclusions what is the difference? Bring your questions and have them answered. This is a class for the entire local church finance team - staff and elected committee.
Lay Leader: Walter Dry, Helen Morrill & Sharon Luther This class will be a discussion-based class for new and experienced local church lay leaders. How did we get here? Why are we here? What are we supposed to do? How much time will this take? We will answer all these questions and more.
Missions: Pam Qualls United Methodist Cooperative Ministries Whether you are a new missions committee member or have several years on the job, this workshop will have ideas and information for you. We'll talk about and find answers to the following questions: How do we evaluate and choose missions to support? How do we allocate mission funds? How do we start new missions? How do we communicate with our congregation about missions? How do we encourage church members to participate in missions? Feel free to bring any other questions you might have, and we'll tackle them, too!

Topics will include a job description, printed materials, and other tools available for your use, update about the current state and needs of the Children's Home and a time for questions and answers. Come and learn how to be an effective Local Church Representative for the Children's Home.
Connecting with Young Adults in Today's World: Emily Oliver (February 9 at Heritage ONLY!) Young people ages 18-35 are considered "the missing generation" from our churches. Come and hear about this vital group from a young clergyperson. Discover how your church, no matter your size or average age, can be a safe place for young adults to grow spiritually. Topics will include; understanding young adults, reaching young adults, creating a young adult ministry, incorporating young people into an older congregation, and raising up young leaders.
United Methodist Men:
Chet Klinger Many of our men's ministries, once prosperous and vigorous and alive with men and boys of all ages are hearing the call to make disciples, to engage the younger men, and to walk daily with the Lord. However, some of these men's ministries are being shipwrecked by the storms of busy lives, broken families, worldly woes, and, simply floundering without a clear view of the horizon, without a crack crew and an admiral, and without a reminder of what our role and purpose as men are in today's high tech world. Getting back to basics is the purpose of this course. |

Lay Speaking Ministries Changes Name effective January 1st
After much discussion, input and thought over recent years, we will begin using the term, Lay Servant Ministries, effective January 1, 2010. We are all very familiar with the previous term of Lay Speaking Ministries. All of us recognize the problems it has caused and continues to cause. Many people are put off, and even frightened by the term lay speaker. Many fail to appreciate the great variety of ministries for which we provide some truly wonderful training. New courses are being developed all the time, and revamping of many old ones is currently underway. To my mind, Lay Servant Ministries captures the essence of the roles and activities that so many of you so selflessly provide for your congregations, districts and conference. We are all servants of Jesus Christ, and I believe that being known as lay servants will intrigue and attract many more people to the training and educational opportunities we provide. Some have expressed concern that we will not be recognized by other conferences or at jurisdictional levels if we change the name. I have discussed this with many people and have been assured this will not be a problem. Some conferences have already changed their names. Additional, our laity contact with the General Board of Discipleship, Sandy Jackson, has no objections. To change the name within the conference has been supported and encouraged by Bishop Whitaker and by our Board of Lay Ministries.
