Greetings!
For the prophets of ancient Israel and then later for Jesus, the community of faith (Israel and then the church), is judged by how well it reaches out to those in need...the stranger, the homeless, the prisoner, the afflicted. It is interesting to note that the community of faith is not judged by the quality of its worship, the beauty of its buildings, the size of its budget, or the numbers in its pews. As important as these are, the bottom line in our relationship with God is how well we witness to and serve others (i.e. our mission outreach).
One of the most important ways we United Methodists serve is through United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR supports emergency relief, refugee ministries, hunger and poverty programs, as well as development projects throughout the world. This witness to the love of God is possible because of gifts to the ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING offering which will be held in most churches on March 22.
There are many great stories about the work of UMCOR. One is From Kenya, where 10 million Kenyans, the majority of them children, are dying due to drought and famine. UMCOR supports Methodist hospitals and famine relief projects throughout the country. Along with medical care and food relief, UMCOR is funding agricultural development projects with seed, tools, and training. Thousands of lives are being saved through UMCOR.
Another one of my favorite stories is from Florida after Hurricane Andrew. An old friend, Roberta Perry, the director of the Florida office of the National Farmworker Ministry, told me that the two organizations that did the most to help the poorest and hardest hit residents of Dade County, those living in the migrant camps, were the U.S. Army and UMCOR. Some of the larger, better known relief organizations found that the camps were just too remote and too difficult to help. UMCOR and the Army found their way to these forgotten ones. UMCOR received special commendation after Hurricane Andrew for their outstanding relief efforts.
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING goes to support the administration of UMCOR so that every dollar given outside of the One Great Hour of Sharing offering will go directly to relief and development. I hope you will give generously on March 22.
Shalom,
John |

Maggie's Minute
This is such a busy time of year in the churches and the district office too. The Church and Pastor Profiles are now complete - and by the time you read this the Year End Statistics will be done and examined by John and myself and sent off to the Conference Office. We've also had 3 very successful training sessions from Bradenton to Clearwater and then, Spring Hill. I will be out of the office for a few days the first of March - up in Leesburg with the other District Office AA's. The next big thing I'll be looking for are the March 31 reports Child/Youth Protection Policy adoption - Review & renew annually. Mail a signed copy of the Annual Review/Endorsement Renewal to the district office by March 31st. (Should the policy undergo major revisions, mail a complete copy to the District Office). Fiscal Responsibility and Management Policy adoption - Review & renew annually. Mail a signed copy of this policy to the District Office by March 31st. Sexual Harassment Policy adoption- Review & renew annually. Mail a signed copy of the Annual Review/ Endorsement Renewal to the district office by March 31st. ---------------------------------------------
Another important item is the Missional Vital Signs Reporter - at this time there are 29 churches that have not indicated that they have filled this position. It is one of the required positions for every church. Since this position will be getting information via email the person must have a working email address. As always if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me either by email flumc-gc@flumc.org or at the District Office 727-585-1207.
A word from the Church Mouse: "The value of all service lies in the spirit in which you serve and not in the importance or magnitude of the service. Even the lowliest task or deed is made holy, joyous, and prosperous when it is filled with love."

Florida Conference Advocacy Days
Children's Week - March 29-31 You are invited to an exciting opportunity to come together with other United Methodists in Florida who are advocating for children and families in poverty. A resolution was passed at Annual Conference 2008 addressing the participation and celebration by local churches in Children's Week advocacy. Children's Week has for years raised awareness of the needs of children in Florida to state legislators and others in Tallahassee, and this year the Conference is working to increase the number of participants and the effectiveness of the training for advocacy. Your presence is vital! We encourage you to attend and to bring along a delegation from your church. For more information, please contact Melinda Trotti, Director of Justice and Spiritual Formation Ministries, at mtrotti@flumc.org or Nancy Dougherty, Florida Conference Advocacy Days Coordinator at nancycumc@verizon.net.

MP3 Helps Puts Focus on Reaching New Disciples
The Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church has developed a logo depicting MP3 (no, not audio downloads) to capture their focus on reaching more people, more young people, and more diverse people. MP3 has become a shorthand way of reminding conference leaders of these priorities. This emphasis emerged out of group discussions held by the bishop and conference leaders across the conference in 2008.
